Chin Strap

How tight should a chin strap/ throat latch be?
I know that this seems like the most basic question ever, but my old riding instructor taught my it should be lose enough to easily put your hand through. Then I was on here one day, and someone told a girl her throat latch on her bridle was to loose, and it looked tight to me. So I am just wondering how tight it actually needs to be?

You know everybody wants a “rule” of thumb. So many fingers for this or that. Ye ah th
at is not so bad a thing until you throw out common sense and just do the rules.
Not all horses are the same and not all personal preferences are the same. It is good to know the rules but more important to think for your self and pay attention to what your horse is telling you.
If you had asked the girl who said it was to loose ; why? She wouldn’t be able to tell you except such and such said so,
So lets think about this…. What is the function of
the throat latch? To hold the headstall on …right? So it should be tight enough to keep the head stall from sliding off.
Now it goes around their neck right? So you do not want it loose enough not to place any restriction on the neck, wind pipe etc.. even when the horse flexes his head.
Simple, huh!
(I had a horse that if you did not use a throat latch he would hold his head just right and shake the head stall/ bit right off on the ground while you were riding. You can imagine how surprised I was the first time it happened!)
