Speed is one of the most vital components of fitness in team games such as football and rugby. If you are faster than your opponent you have a massive advantage. As a defender there is nothing worse th
an an attacker accelerating around you. Speed is key!! So how can we improve an athlete or a personal training clients speed. This article written by the most popular of Newport personal trainers will explain 6 ways you can do so.
Periodise your strength training. The stronger you are the faster you will be. Perform exercises such as; back squats, squats, dead lifts, RDL’s, bench press, pull ups and dips. Try and get as strong as possible performing 3 – 6 reps on all of the above. Strength is key.
Once you are strong, you will need to convert strength to power. Plyometric exercises such as; jump squats, jump lunges, bounding, hopping and box jumps should all be performed on a weekly basis to do so.
Employ a personal trainer and have a speed session. I use a viper belt with my newport personal training clients. Perform repetated 25 metre sprints to improve acceleration. The only way you will get faster is by practicing your sprinting after all.
Join a running club, in South Wales you could join newport harriers, running club. These south wales running clubs have specialist coaches who can work on your technique.
Rest is also important. Ensure you recover after each training session. Your recovery starts for the next session as soon
as you finish your last session.
Improving your stride rate will improve
your speed. Work on your flexibility in your glutes, hamstrings, quadriceps and calfs. This will allow you to lift your knee higher and take longer strides.
